About Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan

Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan is the scientific use of the body in methods of self defense, combined with a strict philosophy guiding the practitioner towards discovering their full potential. Soo Bahk Do, literally meaning “Hand Striking Way,” is the technical aspect of the art, and Moo Duk Kwan, meaning “Institute of Martial Virtue” is the philosophical side. In other words, it is not just techniques of self defense; it is a way of life emphasizing discipline, control of power, and unity of the mind and body.

Soo Bahk Do provides the practitioner with the physical training that allows them to develop both an effective form of self defense as well as a means to develop a strong and healthy body. The physical techniques focus on powerful and effective punching, together with kicking, attacks and counter attacks, which require a high level of physical fitness to execute properly. They relate to those of explosive power, utilizing outward muscular force. In fact, strength training, cardiovascular exercises, and exercise drills are all part of the training process.

This art specializes in developing external energy powerful enough to be able to split wood and break bricks with one strike of their bare hands and feet, as opposed to grappling techniques and wresting moves.

A large part of the physical training focuses on internal techniques which relate to those that utilize greater understanding of body mechanics, coordination, application, and closer control of one's body. Students learn and practice breathing, tension, and relaxation exercises as part of their physical training. These techniques are also used to reduce stress, meditate, increase concentration, and separate from counter-productive thoughts.

Moo Duk Kwan is the philosophy and culture governing the way practitioners of Soo Bahk Do must live their lives. Originally the name given to the first school to teach this martial arts style, it is a brotherhood and school of stopping inner and outer conflict and developing righteousness through Soo Bahk Do training, enforcing discipline and developing character.

This art has been known to drastically improve the lives of its students in many different ways. If live in the metro Danbury area, you are cordially invited by Han Dol Martial Arts School to train in the art as many days as you like within a two week period for free and share your experience. If you are already a Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan practitioner, please share your comments about the benefits you have witnessed personally.
