Han Dol First Annual Western Connecticut State Soo Bahk Do Tournament

Han Dol Martial Arts hosted its first annual Western Connecticut State Soo Bahk Do Championships on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Danbury War Memorial in Danbury, CT after almost two years of operation. Sponsored by Region 1 of the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, the tournament presented advanced skill demonstrations by some of the styles masters in addition to exciting and entertaining competition among its students throughout the tri-state area.

The event began at 10:00am with an accurate representation of the art’s philosophy of discipline, respect, and honorable character by all its participants coming together in unison to stretch their muscles and warm up. Next some of the more respected masters in attendance displayed some of the most complex skills associated with SBDMDK such as splitting blocks of wood with bare hands and feet which require intense concentration. Shortly thereafter the competition based on a point system of exhibiting form and no contact sparing began.

Due to SBDMDK emphasis on its philosophy on strong and honorable character of its followers to strengthen communities, Han Dol Martial Arts ensured that a portion of the proceeds was donated to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a not-for-profit, section 501(c) (3) organization which helps children battle cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

I was very proud of how the tournament gave a very accurate presentation of the traditional philosophy and style of Soo Bahk Do in action. You can tell that the students and masters participating in the tournament practiced the arts concepts in everyday life by looking at their behavior and the remarkable acts of sportsmanship. It says a lot about the emphasis on the teachings of character development and control of the body.
